Early childhood consists of vigorous physical activity and the acquisition of new motor skills and the development of cognitive understanding and language. In this chapter we will concentrate on physical development from conception to the age of five with reference to well-being and risks to the unborn and infant. There will also be some debate about parental choice in respect to having and rearing the child. Although each child is unique, the basic patterns, or principles, of growth and development are universal, predictable and orderly.

So the question remains, how can we let any children pass through early years education without gaining the basics? To the government the answer appears simple: test and rank the children; inspect the nurseries and schools and if they are not meeting the required standards take the setting into special measures, especially if too many children are failing the tests. Some schools are not good enough and need prodding, but most of the reasons why children do not learn are caused by influences beyond a school’s reach.

At first they enter the oral stage and become fixated on feeding from the nipple, and then the anal stage as demonstrated by the toddler’s pleasure in evacuating his or her bowels. In the phallic stage the child becomes fixated on their genitals. In this third stage, Freud contended, male infants become fixated on the mother (Oedipus Complex) as a sexual object and girls become fixated on the father (Electra Complex). When observing children we can identify these basic three stages, but we have to question Freud’s assertions about the sexual objectification of parents by their children (Becket and Taylor, 2010, pp 37–9).
